2018 Physicians for Human Rights National Student Conference

At the Intersections of Power: Communities in Crossfire

Many of the human rights issues we follow today share a gross commonality - disruption of community infrastructure. This is the case for refugees from Syria and Myanmar, immigrants fleeing their homes in Central America, and Haitians looking to build sustainable social medicine options. Upon closer inspection, these issues begin with a powerful authoritarian, be it economical, political, or societal; and many of these power structures maintain their influence at the expense of the communities they destabilize. Repeatedly, we see communities pay the price for the plans of the powerful.

At the 2018 PHR National Student Conference, our goal is to highlight the human perspective of these issues through stories of communities and individuals impacted by the powerful systems that be. We hope to shift the driving force for policies and legislation away from economic or political gain and towards the impact of such structures on humans on the ground.

We encourage all participants who have done research in these fields to submit an abstract for review.

All abstracts must be submitted by October 27 to ensure inclusion in the printed program. However, participants are invited to bring their posters to present at the conference even if their abstracts are submitted after the deadline.
